Audition
Seven years after the death of his wife, widower Shigeharu seeks advice on how to find a new wife from a colleague. Taking advantage of their position as a film company, they stage an audition. In some ways I wish I hadn’t watched this. Not because it was bad (it wasn’t), but because it would save me needing about three gallons of mind bleach. There’s some unpleasantness — it certainly earns its horror credentials — but there’s a lot of cleverness in how it’s done. It has depth. You can go kiri, kiri, kiri.
It feels like every time you get a handle on how the film will play out, Takashi Miike pulls the rug out from under you. And the frequency of those rug pulls just goes up and up until you can barely tell what’s rug and what’s not.
