Dune
In the year 10,191, the most precious substance in the universe is the spice Melange. The spice extends life. The spice expands consciousness. The spice is vital to space travel. The spice exists on only one planet in the entire universe, the vast desert planet Arrakis, also known as Dune. Its native inhabitants, the Fremen, have long held a prophecy that a man would come, a messiah who would lead them to true freedom.

The best thing about this is that it’s Dune, and Dune is a pretty interesting story. The worst thing about it is pretty much everything else.
The exposition is excessive to a degree I’m not sure I’ve seen in any other film. Not only do we get narration, and people explaining things, we get people thinking at us just in case we couldn’t keep up. But then it flips the other way, and you go from having three layers of exposition to just fast-forwarding past a load of interesting development. Then there’s the ending, which I think it’s probably best to just ignore.
While the visual effects are severely dated, some of the practical effects are pretty good. Baron Harkonnen, the navigator, and the weird rat-cat-thing are memorable. But the most memorable bit for me right now is Patrick Stewart charging into battle holding a pug.
