I didn’t really expect much originality from the 7th incarnation of Scream, but I expected a little more than this. It felt like someone had just copied and pasted bits from previous films, jammed them together, and not really been concerned if it made sense or not.
One of the good things about VI was that they didn’t force a load of the legacy characters in. 7 goes pretty much the opposite route. But it doesn’t do it in a fun or interesting way. It’s not fan service, or a clever homage, it just feels like Kevin Williamson is saying “look at me, I get to play in the Scream sandbox, and Wes Craven isn’t here to stop me!”
